Thoothukudi sits on the Gulf of Mannar coast, and the climate here decides which ventilation actually works. The air is hot AND humid, often 34 to 38C through the day with high moisture coming off the sea, plus a constant salt load that eats ordinary steel. That combination matters because evaporative air coolers, which work brilliantly in dry inland heat, do far less in this humid coastal air. So in Thoothukudi we lead with two things: HVLS fans to move large volumes of air across the floor, and exhaust fans to physically pull heat, fumes and moisture out. Coolers come in only for limited spot use at specific working positions.

Thoothukudi is not one industry, it is becoming many, and each breathes differently. The big story is green hydrogen and green ammonia, with players like Sembcorp and NTPC building new process plants, backed by roughly 1.4 lakh crore in investment pledges that are turning the port belt into a national energy hub. Around that sit chemicals and fertilisers, thermal power, the VO Chidambaranar (VOC) Port and its logistics warehouses and sheds, and the older salt and marine trades. New electrolyser halls, ammonia plants, warehouses and port sheds are all coming up at once, and every one of them faces the same first question: how do we keep this floor cool and the air clear in a hot, humid, corrosive coastal environment.

We will be straight with you about where we are based. Aruth manufactures in Ahmedabad, at GF-001 Mauryansh Elanza, Satellite. We are not a same-city Thoothukudi workshop. What we are is a manufacturer that supplies and installs all over India, including across Tamil Nadu, with our own engineers handling the survey, layout, mounting, wiring and after-sales, not a dealer passing a brochure across the table. We already serve units in this state, and a Thoothukudi install is routine work for our team, not an out-of-area exception.

This page breaks down the major Thoothukudi industrial zones, why each needs ventilation, and which Aruth system fits, HVLS, exhaust, FRP exhaust or coolers. Wherever your unit sits, in the VOC Port industrial zone, the green hydrogen hub or the SIPCOT complex, the first step is the same: a free on-site survey, an airflow calculation and a written quote, with no obligation.

Tuticorin Green Hydrogen Hub / VOC Port industrial zone

Green hydrogen & ammonia, chemicals, port logistics

This is Thoothukudi's flagship belt, the port industrial zone and emerging SEZ where green hydrogen and ammonia plants from names like Sembcorp and NTPC are coming up alongside chemical units and large port logistics warehouses. The big new process halls and port sheds run hot under high roofs in humid sea air, so they need HVLS fans to move air across the open floor, industrial and FRP exhaust to pull process heat and chemical fumes out, and FRP construction throughout to survive the salt that corrodes ordinary steel fans within months.

How to choose: HVLS, exhaust, FRP exhaust or coolers for a Thoothukudi factory

The short answer for Thoothukudi: HVLS fans for general comfort over large floors, exhaust fans to physically remove heat, fumes or moisture, FRP exhaust where the air is corrosive or salt-laden, and evaporative air coolers only for limited spot relief, because the humid coastal climate here makes coolers far less effective than they are inland. Most Thoothukudi units we fit end up with a combination of HVLS and exhaust, because the loads stack: a green hydrogen or chemical plant may need HVLS over the open hall AND FRP exhaust over the process lines.

The deciding factor is what is actually in your air, and how humid and salty that air is. Hot, still air over a big shed, a port logistics warehouse, an engineering bay, an electrolyser hall, is an HVLS job: one 7.3 m gearless fan moves a gentle 1 to 2 m/s breeze across up to about 20,000 sq.ft and feels 3 to 5C cooler at skin level. Something you need to physically get out of the building, process heat in an ammonia plant, furnace heat in a thermal power or chemical unit, fumes off a chemical line, calls for exhaust. And because Thoothukudi air carries both salt and, in chemical units, acidic vapour, that exhaust must be FRP corrosion-proof, not ordinary steel, or it will rust out within a year. Coolers we use sparingly, only at fixed working positions where a few degrees of spot relief genuinely helps.

Open, hot, low-fume sheds (port warehouses, engineering, packing, electrolyser halls): HVLS fans 2.4 m to 7.3 m, up to 30% lower bills than banks of conventional fans.
Green hydrogen, ammonia and chemical process plants (VOC Port zone, SIPCOT): HVLS over the open floor plus FRP corrosion-proof exhaust to pull process heat and fumes out.
Salt-air and corrosive chemical environments (anywhere near the coast): FRP exhaust fans up to about 44,000 CFM that survive salt and acid where steel fails.
Thermal power and high-heat process units: high-capacity exhaust to clear furnace and process heat, with HVLS away from the heat source.
Targeted relief for people at fixed positions: limited evaporative cooler use only, since the humid coastal air makes coolers less effective than HVLS plus exhaust.

Why Thoothukudi factories switch to gearless IE5 HVLS

The number that moves Thoothukudi plant owners is the power bill, and with the floor needing air movement nearly year round in this coastal heat, the saving is real. Our HVLS fans run on IE5 gearless PMSM motors, so a single 7.3 m fan covers up to about 20,000 sq.ft and replaces 15 to 20 conventional wall or pedestal fans that together draw far more power and cool far less. Across our installs that works out to up to 30% lower fan-related power, with typical payback inside 18 to 30 months. In Thoothukudi, where cooling runs long hours across most of the year, that payback often comes faster.

Gearless also means almost no maintenance, there is no gearbox to leak oil onto your stock or seize up, which matters in the salty coastal air where every moving part takes a beating. Add the 2-year warranty and the maths is straightforward. We run the actual numbers for your shed during the free survey: floor area, roof height, headcount, your current fan count and your Tamil Nadu tariff, then show you the kW saved and the payback in months before you commit to anything.

Ahmedabad-made, installed across Thoothukudi and Tamil Nadu

We will be honest about this, because it matters. Aruth is a manufacturer based in Ahmedabad, at GF-001 Mauryansh Elanza, Shyamal Cross Rd, Satellite, Ahmedabad 380015. We are not a same-city Thoothukudi workshop, and we would rather you know that up front than discover it later. What you get instead is a manufacturer's full attention: our own engineers do the survey, the layout, the install and the after-sales, with spares built and held at our own factory.

We supply and install all over India, and Tamil Nadu is an active service area for us, including Thoothukudi, the VOC Port industrial zone, the green hydrogen hub and the SIPCOT complex. Our own team travels for the free survey and the installation, and because we build the fans ourselves, lead times stay short and spares come straight from our factory. The free site survey is genuinely free and genuinely useful: an experienced ventilation engineer on your floor, measuring the heat, fume, moisture and salt load and giving you a layout and quote, whether you are a new green ammonia plant or a standalone chemical unit in SIPCOT.

Case study: a SIPCOT Tuticorin chemical unit clears fumes and beats the salt air

  1. Before — the problem

A chemical processing unit in the SIPCOT complex at Tuticorin called us with a problem we see right across this coastal belt. Their roughly 20,000 sq.ft processing hall ran reaction and packing lines that filled the shed with hot, acidic vapour, and the combination of that vapour and the salt-laden sea air had already rusted out two sets of ordinary steel exhaust fans in under two years. On top of the corrosion, the humid floor sat warm and sticky through the afternoon, and the working positions near the process lines were uncomfortable for the operators.

  2. What Aruth installed

We did a free on-site survey, measured a roof height of about 8 m, and mapped where the chemical fumes were hanging over the lines. Our recommendation was a combination built for this exact coastal, corrosive environment: FRP corrosion-proof exhaust fans, sized around 40,000 CFM total, on the process-hall wall to physically pull the acidic vapour and moisture out instead of letting it rot the building, plus three 6.1 m gearless IE5 HVLS fans over the open floor to wash the whole shed with a steady 1 to 2 m/s breeze and beat the humid heat. We kept coolers out of this one, because in Thoothukudi's humid air the HVLS plus exhaust combination does the real work.

  3. The result

After installation the chemical haze cleared, the shed stopped trapping moisture, and because the new fans are FRP they are built to survive the salt and acid that destroyed the steel units. The floor felt 4 to 5C cooler at working positions, which the operators noticed straight away, and the total connected load for the three HVLS fans came in well under what the old wall fans had been drawing. Everything is covered by our 2-year warranty and serviced by our own team. The owner's main comment was that he should have switched to FRP before he lost two fan sets to the coast.
